The Inspiring Story of Sanaro Village Project Implementation Committee

The Community-based Forest Management and Livelihood Improvement project in Meghalaya (MegLIFE), supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), commenced in October 2020. The primary objective of this project is to undertake sustainable forest management, enhance livelihood opportunities, and strengthen institutional frameworks within villages, thereby contributing to the conservation of natural resources, biodiversity, and the improvement of socio-economic conditions in Meghalaya.

The story of the women from the Sanaro Village Project Implementation Committee (VPIC), under Thadlaskein Block, West Jaintia Hills District, is indeed inspiring. Formed on April 5, 2022, under the MegLIFE project, the VPIC embarked on various initiatives, including the plantation of over 36 hectares, the ongoing construction of a community hall, and the establishment of a nursery. However, it is the remarkable role played by the women of the committee in managing the nursery that truly stands out.

Despite having zero prior experience in nursery management, these women demonstrated immense dedication and enthusiasm to contribute to the conservation of the environment. Their motivation to safeguard Mother Earth drove them to take charge of the nursery completely. Through their hard work and perseverance, they successfully raised an impressive 14,460 saplings of champe, Khasi pine, boki puma, lalo puma, gamari, acacia, and mango.

Their commitment didn't end with simply raising the saplings; they ensured the proper care and maintenance of the nursery, showcasing their determination to make a meaningful impact. This story highlights the power of passion and determination in overcoming challenges and achieving success, even in unfamiliar territories.
